Lumberyard Project
Designer Lars Hofsjö started The Lumberyard Project in the Summer of 2020, a time when many were forced into self-reflection whilst normal daily life paused, and a global pandemic took root. The future was uncertain, and nothing could be taken for granted.
Lars decided to relocate from the city to his countryside summer retreat/workshop to focus on creating a unique collection of furniture.
In contrast to Lars' commercial successes the Lumberyard Project was purely personal, a pro-active reaction to the situation he found himself in. A project created from the soul, a meditative and fun process, and the only person it had to please was his harshest critic; Lars himself.
The result is an ongoing collection of furniture that speaks equally about art as it does functionality—simple forms and traditional craftsmanship, all created with materials sourced from the local lumber yard.
The assigment—Help define this unique segment of furniture/art, design a logo and backdrop with the adequate qualities to communicate it.
[ artistic function ] story telling, intellectual satisfaction and personal enjoyment.
The chosen font aim for a classic Swedish craft shop feel, loosely kerned to give a slight high-end touch. combined with a symbol that is influenced by various distinct parts from the furniture design itself. Constructed from the “L” and the “Y” in “Lumberyard”, with no lines vertically- or horizontally aligned to break it free from any grid, real or imaginary. The symbol aims to lead the mind to boards randomly placed in a scrapheap or the organic shape of a stylized branch. A Scandinavian take on an asian logogram.
